Using The DiSC Profile Test For Forming Work Teams

By Rebecca Hamilton

With this model, managers and employees are able to determine the dynamics that make for compatible working relationships. The DiSC profile test gives information about personalities that helps form better pairs and teams based on their personalities and behavioral styles. This model is the best paper instrument in the business world.

This instrument measures four different aspects of personality of a person. This lets the manager or HR person decide if a potential hire is suitable for the company, or would not fit at all with the company's goals and values. It helps them to assimilate compatible teams in the workforce. This keeps the company working at optimum performance.

This system assesses the employee in four different areas, to find compatible personalities. These areas form the acronym DiSC, hence the name of the system. These four areas are: Dominance- How one addresses problems and challenges; Influence-How one interacts and influences people and contacts; Steadiness-How one deals with pace and consistency; Compliance-How one deals with procedures and constraints. These are factors that impact working relationships in a big way.

The person who administers this instrument must undergo training. They learn how to combine personality types to form good working pairs and teams. They also learn how to share these scores with the persons involved to help them bring out their best traits. This training includes training in the DiSC model, how to identify company goals and missions, and gaining an understanding of the acronym and its components.

Training in the technique of using this model is the most important. Training can be accessed in several ways. Online, live web instruction is the most recommended. Online training that is not live, but can be accessed at any time is another method. A self-study course allows one to study independently if that is their preference. For those preferring a live class, there are several that can be attended in many areas. Also, if a company wants to sponsor their own training class, that is also possible.

When forming work teams, the system is excellent for determining the best working arrangement. Knowing the different aspects of personalities, the dominance, influence, steadiness, and compliance parts of their personalities, and understanding how different aspects work together or not helps to avoid non-viable pairing. Getting the proper arrangements will help make the most of a working pair.

The assessment by this instrument can help a person understand their own personality, as well as helping the HR person understand as well. Exploring traits of each person helps with the understanding. For example, each trait has sixteen different traits that define that trait, and the person can determine what they have for each trait. There are opposites for each trait, that determines how the exhibit it. For example, in the area of influencing, there is optimistic and trusting, in opposition to suspicious and skeptical. Each trait has similar opposites.

None of the traits are truly negative. It is the way a person uses the traits that determine if they will lead to a working relationship. Compatibility is determined by these traits and ensure a good team. The HR person should share the traits for each person with them so they can make the most of them, and can work on relationships. This will also help them with their personal abilities.
